An inmate at the U.S. Disciplinary Barracks on Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, became the center of attention after a failed escape attempt left him entangled in razor-sharp concertina wire atop a security fence.

A photograph of the moment, showing the inmate suspended awkwardly as two soldiers attempted to help him down, quickly went viral after being shared by the social media account “U.S. Army WTF! Moments.”

The escape attempt occurred on April 29 and involved two inmates housed at the U.S. Army's maximum-security military prison.

According to Lt. Col. Bryen Freigo, spokesperson for the U.S. Army Combined Arms Center at Fort Leavenworth, the breakout effort was thwarted by correctional specialists from Fort Leavenworth’s Corrections Brigade.

“The inmates were treated for injuries and returned to custody,” Freigo told Task & Purpose. “Public safety was maintained throughout the incident. The attempted escape remains under investigation.”

The dramatic image, which shows one of the inmates caught in coils of concertina wire high above the prison yard, quickly circulated online.

The photo triggered widespread reaction and speculation, particularly due to a caption claiming the trapped man was a former Green Beret. That claim, however, was refuted by military officials.

Freigo clarified to Task & Purpose that the individual in the photograph was not the person named in the post.

Escapes from the prison are extremely rare due to the high level of security and isolation measures in place.

While no names or charges have been officially released, the image itself offered a stark visual reminder of the consequences of such a desperate act.

In it, the inmate appears to be hanging precariously, limbs awkwardly draped over the barbed coils, while two uniformed personnel work carefully to disentangle him.

The incident has sparked a wave of online commentary, ranging from humor to concern.

Many commenters expressed disbelief at the apparent lack of planning in the escape effort, while others voiced sympathy for the inmate’s injuries.

However, correctional authorities have maintained a firm stance on the situation, reiterating that safety and security protocols functioned as intended.

“The swift response by our correctional staff ensured that no members of the public were at risk and that both inmates were quickly secured,” Freigo said.

He did not elaborate on how the inmates managed to get past internal security measures or reach the perimeter fence.

Though the exact circumstances remain unclear, the image and aftermath suggest that the escape attempt was both dangerous and ultimately ill-conceived.

The use of concertina wire—a type of coiled barbed wire designed to maim and slow intruders—indicates just how serious the Army takes perimeter security at Fort Leavenworth.

This is not the first time an attempted breakout from a military prison has garnered public attention, but the combination of graphic imagery and speculative social media commentary has added an extra layer of visibility to this case.

Officials have yet to release a timeline for when the investigation will conclude or whether any charges related to the escape attempt will be filed.

The attempted escape underscores the challenges faced by military correctional facilities, which must balance security, discipline, and the rehabilitation of inmates, many of whom are former service members.

Despite the sensational nature of the viral photograph, Army officials have continued to emphasize their commitment to professionalism and security.

“At this time, we are focusing on the internal investigation and the safety of our personnel and inmates,” Freigo said.

As the Army works to determine how the inmates breached security and whether disciplinary or legal repercussions will follow, the image of a man suspended in wire atop the fortress-like prison remains a potent symbol—a reminder of both the strict confines of military justice and the desperation that sometimes arises behind its walls.
