A former U.S. Coast Guard officer has been arrested and charged for allegedly making online threats to assassinate President Donald Trump, according to court documents filed by the FBI, as reported by The New York Post.

Peter Stinson, a Virginia resident, served in the Coast Guard from 1988 until his retirement in 2021. During his service, Stinson held roles as a sharpshooter and instructor for the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

According to an affidavit filed Friday by an FBI task force officer, Stinson is accused of posting a series of graphic threats across multiple social media platforms referencing violent methods of killing the President.

The affidavit states that on May 9, Stinson posted that President Trump needed to be “[L]uigied,” referring to Luigi Mangione, who was accused of killing United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson in 2023.

The FBI alleges that Stinson repeatedly discussed violent scenarios involving firearms, knives, and poisoning.

One of the posts cited in the document shows Stinson acknowledging that he "did not have the necessary skills" to carry out an assassination but implied dishonesty about that claim.

Investigators noted that Stinson frequently used the number “8647” in his posts.

Authorities believe this was likely in reference to an Instagram post by former FBI Director James Comey, which had previously sparked an investigation from the Department of Homeland Security and the U.S. Secret Service.

According to the affidavit, Stinson continued posting the number “8647” at least 13 more times on the platform BlueSky.

The FBI also reported that Stinson has publicly claimed affiliation with ANTIFA. On February 2, he allegedly posted on his X account:

“Sure. This is war. Sides will be drawn. Antifa always wins in the end. Violence is inherently necessary.”

The most recent post referenced in the affidavit came on June 11. Investigators claim that Stinson wrote on BlueSky, “When he dies, the party is going to be yuge.”

Stinson was formally charged with making threats to kill the President of the United States. He is scheduled to make his initial court appearance in federal court on Wednesday.

The case is being investigated by federal law enforcement agencies and is expected to proceed through the U.S. District Court system. No additional charges have been announced at this time.
