A weekend attack on a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) sub-office in Washington state is now under investigation as an act of arson, according to a statement from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) released Tuesday, as reported by Fox News.

Authorities say an unidentified individual threw a rock through a window of the ICE-affiliated building in Yakima and subsequently started a fire.

The motive behind the incident remains under investigation, but DHS confirmed that local and federal agencies are working together to identify and apprehend the suspect.

The DHS labeled the perpetrator as a “cowardly” rioter, emphasizing that attacks on government facilities are serious criminal acts that will be fully prosecuted.

“The Department of Homeland Security is aware of the incident and is supporting the ongoing investigation by local law enforcement,” the agency said in a statement. “This type of criminal activity threatens the safety of federal employees and the security of our facilities.”

The attack occurred over the weekend and did not result in any reported injuries. The full extent of the damage has not yet been released. No group has claimed responsibility for the incident, and law enforcement has not announced any arrests as of Tuesday.

ICE has been the target of repeated acts of vandalism and arson across the country in recent years, often by individuals or groups opposed to immigration enforcement policies.

The Yakima Fire Department and Yakima Police Department are leading the local response and are coordinating with DHS investigators and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF).

Security footage from the scene is currently under review. Authorities are asking members of the public with information about the suspect or the incident to come forward.

ICE confirmed that the sub-office will continue operating while repairs are made and emphasized that its personnel remain committed to carrying out their federal duties.
