Kadena Air Base in Okinawa, Japan, has announced a series of safety inspections for its fleet of F-15E Strike Eagles after a recent incident involving an emergency landing by one of the aircraft.

The move comes just days after an F-15E, returning from a deployment to Navy Support Facility Diego Garcia, discovered mid-flight that it had lost one of its wheels.

The incident, which occurred earlier this week, prompted immediate response from Kadena’s leadership and emergency teams. Despite the mechanical failure, the aircraft landed safely with no injuries reported.

Both airmen aboard the aircraft — members of the 336th Expeditionary Fighter Squadron — were unharmed during the landing. The missing wheel was later recovered on the flight line at Diego Garcia.

The emergency prompted Kadena to temporarily ground its F-15E fleet for a full round of safety inspections. While no further issues have been reported, the inspections are being carried out as a precautionary measure to ensure that all aircraft are flightworthy.

According to the base, the fighters will return to operational status immediately after successfully passing their inspections.

The squadron deployed to Kadena in 2023 to help maintain air superiority capabilities at the base while the Air Force gradually phased out Kadena’s aging fleet of F-15C and F-15D Eagle fighters. Those older aircraft have been returned to the United States for retirement.
