Kadena Air Base in Okinawa, Japan, has announced a series of safety inspections for its fleet of F-15E Strike Eagles after a recent incident involving an emergency landing by one of the aircraft.

The move comes just days after an F-15E, returning from a deployment to Navy Support Facility Diego Garcia, discovered mid-flight that it had lost one of its wheels.

The incident, which occurred earlier this week, prompted immediate response from Kadena’s leadership and emergency teams. Despite the mechanical failure, the aircraft landed safely with no injuries reported.

Both airmen aboard the aircraft — members of the 336th Expeditionary Fighter Squadron — were unharmed during the landing. The missing wheel was later recovered on the flight line at Diego Garcia.

“The way the aircrew handled the landing is a testament to their training and professionalism, and I want to thank the first responders and safety teams for being poised and ready to respond,” said Brig. Gen. John Gallemore, commander of the 18th Wing at Kadena, in a public statement.

“This event fortifies my confidence in Team Kadena’s ability to react to complex problems on a moment’s notice.”

The emergency prompted Kadena to temporarily ground its F-15E fleet for a full round of safety inspections. While no further issues have been reported, the inspections are being carried out as a precautionary measure to ensure that all aircraft are flightworthy.

According to the base, the fighters will return to operational status immediately after successfully passing their inspections.

Kadena also confirmed that the runway used during the emergency landing has undergone a complete inspection and is now fully operational. The airfield showed no lasting damage from the landing, and flight operations have continued without interruption.

The affected F-15E Strike Eagle belongs to the 336th Fighter Squadron, which is based at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base in North Carolina.

The squadron deployed to Kadena in 2023 to help maintain air superiority capabilities at the base while the Air Force gradually phased out Kadena’s aging fleet of F-15C and F-15D Eagle fighters. Those older aircraft have been returned to the United States for retirement.

The presence of the 336th at Kadena is part of the Air Force’s broader effort to maintain a strong and flexible force posture in the Indo-Pacific region. With tensions continuing to rise in the area, particularly around Taiwan and the South China Sea, forward-deployed forces like those at Kadena remain a critical component of U.S. strategy.

While the cause of the wheel detachment has not yet been publicly disclosed, a formal safety investigation is underway. Such inquiries are standard following incidents involving mechanical failure or emergency procedures, and they typically include analysis of maintenance records, parts integrity, and flight operations data.

Brig. Gen. Gallemore’s praise of the aircrew and ground teams reflects a broader theme of readiness and professionalism at Kadena. Emergency landings pose serious risks, particularly for high-speed combat aircraft like the F-15E, which are not designed to land with missing components.

The fact that both crew members remained safe and the aircraft avoided further damage speaks to the quality of training and preparedness within the unit.

As Kadena proceeds with its inspections and investigation, base officials have reiterated that safety remains the top priority. The swift response and continued operational readiness of the runway underscore the base’s commitment to mission continuity, even amid unexpected challenges.

With the F-15E inspections underway and a focus on maintaining force readiness in the Pacific, Kadena’s response to this incident serves as a reminder of the importance of adaptability and vigilance in military aviation.

For now, the base’s operations continue, supported by the professionalism and resilience of its airmen.
