In a move that underscores President Donald J. Trump's unwavering commitment to law and order, the Pentagon announced Thursday that it is scaling back the National Guard presence in Los Angeles—leaving only 250 troops behind to continue safeguarding federal personnel and property.
The decision marks a strategic shift in federal efforts to counter widespread unrest linked to protests over the Trump administration’s strong stance on illegal immigration.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, a staunch supporter of President Trump's America First doctrine, ordered 1,350 National Guard troops to redeploy this week.
This comes after the successful de-escalation of lawless activity around federal buildings and immigration enforcement operations in the city.

“We greatly appreciate the support of the more than 5,000 Guardsmen and Marines who mobilized to Los Angeles to defend Federal functions against the rampant lawlessness occurring in the city,” said Sean Parnell, chief Pentagon spokesperson.
His remarks highlighted what the Trump administration has long emphasized—federal intervention is sometimes necessary when local leaders refuse to maintain public safety.

In early June, roughly 4,000 National Guard soldiers and 700 U.S. Marines were deployed to Los Angeles to secure key federal sites, including the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) offices and detention facilities downtown.

The decision was made despite vocal opposition from local and state officials who seemed more concerned with political optics than public safety.
California Governor Gavin Newsom—never shy about attacking the Trump administration—quickly labeled the federal response “political theater” and accused President Trump of using military personnel as “props.”
In an official statement, Newsom said, “The women and men of our military deserve more than to be used as props in the federal government’s propaganda machine.”
But the facts tell a different story. Federal troops were deployed to protect federal property and ensure that immigration laws were enforced in a city where local officials have actively resisted cooperation with ICE.
In fact, National Guard soldiers were critical in supporting federal operations, such as the July 7 enforcement mission at MacArthur Park, an area known for its large immigrant population. Troops accompanied federal agents, providing necessary backup as tensions flared.

Despite claims from Mayor Karen Bass that the redeployment was “another win for Los Angeles,” it’s clear that the National Guard’s presence helped prevent violence and protected federal interests.
The troops’ presence was mostly limited to federal installations, and most remained stationed at the Joint Forces Training Base in Los Alamitos during the operation—hardly the “invasion” critics claimed.
The backlash from California leaders has been predictable. Governor Newsom even filed a lawsuit against the federal government, claiming President Trump had no authority to activate the Guard without his approval.
Though a lower court briefly ruled in Newsom’s favor, the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals—hardly a bastion of conservative jurisprudence—temporarily blocked the judge’s order, affirming the president’s constitutional right to defend federal personnel and enforce federal laws.
President Trump has made it clear: America will not tolerate lawless zones, and federal authority will not be undermined by partisan grandstanding.
His bold action in Los Angeles sent a clear message—when local leaders fail, the federal government will step in to protect its people and uphold the rule of law.

The redeployment of troops should not be misinterpreted as a retreat but rather as a sign of success.
With violence quelled and federal sites secure, the Trump administration has demonstrated once again that its tough-on-crime and tough-on-illegal-immigration policies work.
As the 250 remaining troops continue to ensure that federal officers can carry out their duties without fear of mob interference, one thing is certain: President Trump delivered on his promise to restore order and defend the interests of all Americans—even in the face of hostility from local political elites.
While left-wing officials in California may celebrate the drawdown, it's clear that their resistance only served to delay necessary action.
President Trump acted decisively, lawfully, and with the interests of national security at heart. In the battle between chaos and control, Trump chose to stand with America.
