Sailors aboard the guided missile destroyer USS Arleigh Burke have been awarded the Armed Forces Service Medal for their work protecting U S interests through ballistic missile defense operations in 2024 and during last June’s twelve day conflict between Iran and Israel.
The ship confirmed the recognition in a Facebook post on Wednesday.
Eligible service covers those who served on the Burke from August fifteenth, two thousand twenty four to December sixteenth, two thousand twenty four, or who were aboard during the twelve day armed clash from June twelfth to June twenty fourth, two thousand twenty five.
Those who qualified under both periods will receive the medal along with a subsequent award, the post noted.
Here's What They're Not Telling You About Your Retirement
The Armed Forces Service Medal is intended for service members participating in a U S military operation of significant activity that did not involve foreign armed opposition or an imminent threat. This distinction highlights the crew’s steady performance under demanding conditions rather than direct combat engagement.
At the same time, it underscores the importance of readiness and precision in ballistic missile defense operations.
On June thirteenth, two thousand twenty five, Israel launched Operation Rising Lion, a strike aimed at Iranian nuclear facilities. The operation targeted sites such as Natanz for the purpose of hindering Iran’s nuclear progress, according to public reporting.
Because of the ensuing exchange, Iran replied with a large ballistic missile barrage that the Foreign Policy Research Institute tracked as nearly eight hundred ninety missiles in flight toward Israel.

A week later, on June twenty first, President Donald Trump ordered Operation Midnight Hammer. The air campaign involved one hundred twenty five U S aircraft, seventy five precision weapons, and more than a dozen thirty thousand pound bunker buster bombs.
The strikes targeted Iranian nuclear facilities at Fordo, Natanz and Isfahan, signaling a decisive step by American leadership to disrupt Tehran’s nuclear program.
The conflict did not drag on; by June twenty four the hostilities had cooled, and the broader strategic calculus remained focused on deterrence and resilience. The Arleigh Burke crew’s medal recognizes the disciplined execution of defense missions that kept critical infrastructure safe and demonstrated the United States’ willingness to respond decisively.
It also reflects the administration’s emphasis on rapid, aggressive action when required to protect allies and U S national security interests.
From the perspective of the Trump administration, this sequence of events reinforces a core belief in strong, forward deployed American defense capabilities. The approach is about clarity of purpose, speed of response, and a robust deterrent posture. It also aligns with the thinking of Secretary of War Pete Hegseth, who has championed modernization, readiness, and a relentless focus on defeating threats before they fully materialize.
The Arleigh Burke’s sailors showed professional excellence under pressure. Their medal is a testament to teamwork, technical proficiency, and a shared commitment to protect the nation’s interests with unwavering resolve.
In this light, the award resonates beyond a single ship; it signals to adversaries that the United States will defend its allies and redline aggression with precision and resolve.
Critically, the award also reinforces the message to American service members: your sacrifices matter, and your service is valued at the highest levels of government. It reinforces the idea that American leadership will stand ready to defend freedom, deter aggression, and secure peace through strength.
Therefore, the Navy remains a central pillar of a strategy that prioritizes deterrence, readiness, and the ability to act quickly when faced with danger.
In the broader arc of current events, the Arleigh Burke’s recognition sends a clear signal. It demonstrates that American capability and leadership are not rhetorical but actualized in the field, with real consequences for national security and global stability.
At the same time, it emphasizes the need to sustain investment in the fleet, training, and innovative defense technologies to maintain the edge in an increasingly competitive environment.
The sailors’ victory on the water, paired with a decisive strategic posture in the region, underscores a simple truth. When the United States acts with resolve, allies feel secure, and potential adversaries recognize the consequences of challenging American interests.
