In a 2003 broadcast of Scarborough Country, Joe Scarborough sharply criticized a California bill that would allow illegal immigrants to obtain driver’s licenses, arguing the move was politically motivated and posed a risk to national security.

Scarborough framed the legislation as an effort by Democrats to bolster then-Gov. Gray Davis, whom he described as politically vulnerable at the time.

“Tonight on Scarborough Country, a bill approved by the State of California giving illegal immigrants driver's licenses,” Scarborough said.

“Is this a desperate move by Democrats to keep Gray Davis in office at the expense of national security?”

He said the measure reflected what he viewed as a broader strategy by California Democrats to appeal to illegal immigrants by legitimizing unlawful behavior.

“Tonight, we look at the left Coast's most endangered politician, Governor Gray Davis and his Democratic Party's latest attempts to show illegal aliens that crime pays,” Scarborough said.

Scarborough noted that the Democratic-controlled legislature had advanced the bill out of committee, describing its implications in stark terms.

“The Democratic legislature has actually passed a bill out of committee that allows illegal immigrants to get a California's driver's license,” he said.

“That's right, by giving these criminals the most accepted form of identification in America that California Democrats buy votes for themselves.”

He argued that political considerations were outweighing public safety concerns.

“It looks like to me, at least a political gamemanship is trumping national security,” Scarborough said.

Scarborough warned that granting driver’s licenses would effectively legitimize illegal immigration and send a dangerous signal.

“As illegal immigrants are given a free pass, this plan seems to me to legitimize illegal immigration once and for all, and it's dangerous,” he said.

“And it owes more to winning votes for politicians in keeping our country safe from future terror attacks.”

He said the policy would encourage further lawbreaking by rewarding those who enter the country illegally.

“It's frightening, folks,” Scarborough said. “Aren't we sending a message to illegal immigrants, break our laws. Come into our country, flood over the borders, and we're going to reward you by giving you a driver's license.”

Scarborough emphasized that illegal immigration is a violation of the law and should not be met with benefits.

“They're breaking the law. It's that simple,” he said.

“If you break the law, you shouldn't get a driver's license. You shouldn't be in our country.”

He concluded by urging viewers to take action and pressure the governor to block the legislation.

“Now, if you want your voice heard on this issue, you can send a note to Governor Gray Davis and tell him, if this bill crosses his desk, he should veto it,” Scarborough said.
