In a moment thick with history and pride, thousands of sailors from the Ford Carrier Strike Group were formally recognized for their heroic service in the war with Iran, receiving the rarely bestowed Presidential Unit Citation.

The recognition, presented by War Secretary Pete Hegseth in Norfolk, Virginia, honored the warriors who faced constant enemy threats while striking hundreds of Iranian targets as part of Operation Epic Fury.

According to the citation, signed by Acting Secretary of the Navy Hung Cao, the strike group “distinguished themselves by outstanding warfighting prosecution while engaged in sustained combat operations against a determined enemy” between February 28 and May 1, 2026.

The language is classic military understatement for what these sailors endured: persistent missile threats, constant drone swarms, and ceaseless missions executed under fire.

The Ford’s return to Norfolk after a grueling 326-day deployment was less a homecoming than a victory lap.

War Secretary Hegseth, Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Daryl Caudle, and other top brass praised the crew’s courage, skill, and unyielding commitment in a conflict that tested the U.S. Navy’s mettle against one of the most aggressive foes America has faced in decades.

The Presidential Unit Citation is the military’s highest collective award, reserved for units that display unparalleled bravery under enemy fire.

It puts the Ford Carrier Strike Group in the company of legends — alongside Marine heroes from Chosin Reservoir and the Rangers who stormed Normandy on D-Day.

Earning that distinction in modern warfare is both a historic mark and a reminder of America’s renewed strength under real wartime leadership.

The Ford Strike Group included not only the massive aircraft carrier USS Gerald R. Ford but also the destroyers USS Winston S. Churchill, USS Bainbridge, and USS Mahan, among others.

Nine squadrons from Carrier Air Wing Eight kept the skies hot and the pressure on Iran from above, together launching more than 1,700 air sorties.

Every mission carried the risk of incoming missiles or kamikaze drones, yet the crews pressed forward—unflinching and relentless.

The war with Iran, which erupted into full-scale combat in early 2026, has tested America’s modern fighting force. The Ford’s actions, and the recognition it earned, make clear that U.S. naval dominance remains unmatched.

While a tentative ceasefire now holds, two other American carrier groups remain on station, ready if Tehran decides to test U.S. resolve again.

The Ford’s incredible deployment didn’t start in the Persian Gulf—it spanned the globe.

The carrier steamed from the Atlantic to the Mediterranean, then to Northern Europe for NATO drills, before being redirected to the Caribbean late in 2025.

There, it played a central role in Operation Absolute Resolve, which ousted Venezuelan autocrat Nicolás Maduro and seized illegal oil shipments headed for China.

The crew’s combined experience from that operation only sharpened their edge once they were called into the Iranian conflict.

By early 2026, as tensions exploded, the Ford once again crossed the Atlantic to join the USS Abraham Lincoln and USS George H.W. Bush in Operation Epic Fury.

Together, they launched thousands of coordinated strikes on Iranian military infrastructure, ports, and naval assets. U.S. naval aviation proved devastatingly effective, showcasing American precision power even in the face of enemy swarm tactics.

Several challenges tested the Ford’s endurance beyond combat. The ship battled persistent plumbing failures that flooded compartments and a fire in the laundry section that required repairs in a European port.

Yet, even amid those tribulations, the sailors never faltered. Their discipline and resilience underscored why the Presidential Unit Citation is such an apt recognition of their achievement.

War Secretary Hegseth praised the sailors for their “unbreakable will to fight and win,” reminding the crowd that modern warfare demands not just technology, but grit and faith in mission—the kind of leadership that America has again found under men who understand war, not bureaucracy.

The award also serves as a clear signal to adversaries that America’s mayhem-makers at sea are not just sailing for show. When called upon, they deliver precise, punishing blows while sailing under the banner of a nation that still knows how to win wars.

For the sailors of the Ford Carrier Strike Group, this moment isn’t only recognition—it’s a declaration of America’s strength, resolve, and resurgent military spirit.

Few awards in the U.S. arsenal of honors carry this much weight or history.

The Ford Strike Group now shares company not only with the giants of past wars but also with the reborn spirit of American might—a spirit defined by strength, purpose, and a warrior ethos that liberal bureaucrats can’t manufacture or understand.

Every time American sailors step onto the deck of a carrier named for a president, they write the next chapter of naval power. And with the Ford’s Presidential Unit Citation, that chapter is written boldly, in the ink of courage and victory.
