Suppressors provide a major combat advantage by reducing muzzle flash and weapon noise, helping American troops conceal their positions.

Yet the same equipment can blast concentrated toxic gases and metal particles back toward the service member pulling the trigger.

The danger is particularly concerning for special operators who fire frequently, sometimes inside buildings and other confined environments.

Advocates argue that suppressor exposure deserves the same serious attention now given to hearing loss, blast overpressure and traumatic brain injuries.

The veteran led Special Operations Association of America recently highlighted the potential health effects of conventional suppressors.

Operators described the residue as “a thick grime or dust that covers your head, face, neck, and hands, and even gets in your mouth … it can’t be good for us.”

Dr. Chris Palmer, a former Pentagon official and chief scientist for HUXWRX Safety Co., reviewed more than 100 studies involving gunfire and exposure to hydrogen cyanide and ammonia. He said potential health consequences include reduced sperm motility, deformities, sleep disorders, Parkinson’s disease and Bradykinesia, or slowed movement.

“If we have people getting much lower doses and having poor health outcomes, I feel I can take the scientific leap and say, Hey, we know that the dose of this compound on the human system comes out with these kinds of bad, negative effects. We know that [Special Operations Forces] operators and people who shoot every week have much higher doses of these compounds … if these things happen at a lower dose to the average person, I can say that this compound definitely contributes to those kind of outcomes in SOF, while noting that our guys and gals are exposed to a lot more,” Palmer said.

Palmer contends the gases are concentrated and forcefully directed toward shooters, especially inside enclosed spaces. That combination can expose operators to levels exceeding limits accepted under EPA and industry guidelines.

HUXWRX sells a patented suppressor that redirects gases through internal coils and tests emissions using an airtight enclosure. Sig Sauer also offers technology intended to reduce blowback, while toxic exposure concerns prompted a 2024 parts redesign for the Army’s Next Generation Squad Weapon.

Ryan Ziegler, chief of veteran health and research for the association, emphasized that the organization is not endorsing any company or product. A Green Beret, former Special Forces medic and commissioned officer, Ziegler said he encountered the issue personally while serving as a unit executive officer.

“I would get phone calls from guys when they’re in training environments or overseas,” he said. Those reports included headaches and nausea following several days of heavy shooting in confined spaces.

Determining the precise cause can be difficult because special operators face numerous hazards, including weapon gases, door charges and repeated blast overpressure. Any of those exposures can produce overlapping neurological or physical symptoms.

Special Operations Command research has documented what Ziegler called a “constellation of symptoms” affecting special operations personnel more severely than conventional forces. Those problems include headaches, neurobehavioral symptoms, suicidality and several forms of cancer.

“We have a unique set of issues … when we look at what exposures are different for us in training and in combat than a conventional force that would cause these things, it’s hard,” Ziegler said. “We can’t just point to one thing.”

The recently passed House version of the fiscal 2027 National Defense Authorization Act includes $5 million for blast overpressure mitigation devices on small and medium caliber weapons.

It would also create a testing program and establish a “Blast Overpressure Task Force” within the Department of Veterans Affairs, although the Senate must still act before negotiations can begin.

Ziegler wants toxic suppressor blowback placed within that same safety, acquisition and monitoring system.

“[The Pentagon] already has the machinery, congressionally mandated blast overpressure studies in quantified weapon system blast effects on brain and auditory health inform risk mitigation and acquisition policy,” he said. “So, toxic blowback belongs inside that same acquisition and monitoring framework, and not treated as a separate issue.”

HUXWRX has won major federal contracts, including work with the FBI Hostage Rescue Team, and Palmer said military customers are increasingly asking about safer retrofits.

“Our job is to make it as safe as we can,” he said. “We’re not here to pretend that they’re going to get no fumes and they’re going to get no exposure. Our job is to get them as much decrement in that exposure as we can without giving up operational capability.”
