A National Guardsman was shot in the leg Sunday night after troops intervened in a street fight in Washington, D.C., according to police. Three soldiers exchanged gunfire with the alleged suspect after the confrontation escalated on a nearby sidewalk.

The wounded Guardsman was taken to a local hospital, where he was treated for what a police official described as “non-life threatening injuries.” A task force spokesperson said Monday morning that the soldier had been released from the hospital.

Washington, D.C. Metropolitan Police Department interim Police Chief Jeffrey Carrol described the shooting during a press conference at the scene. He said seven or eight Guardsmen were sitting in a parked van in Southeast Washington when they noticed a fight involving “some individuals.”

The Guardsmen left the van and intervened in the confrontation, according to the chief’s account. One person involved in the fight then produced a firearm and opened fire.

“An individual that had been involved in the fight had pulled out a firearm and began shooting,” Carroll said. “Members of the National Guard immediately gave commands to that individual to put down the gun.”

The armed individual did not comply with those commands and instead turned the weapon toward the Guardsmen, the chief said. The soldiers then responded with gunfire.

“That individual then pointed the weapon towards National Guard members, who returned fire to that individual,” Carroll said. The exchange left both a Guardsman and the alleged suspect wounded.

Police said three National Guardsmen fired their weapons during the incident. Investigators had not determined which soldier fired the round that struck the suspect.

“Three members of the National Guard discharged firearms,” Carroll said. “Which one specifically struck the suspect in this case, we don’t know at this point.”

The chief confirmed that the alleged suspect was shot in the abdomen. Both he and the wounded Guardsman were transported to local hospitals for treatment following the gunfire.

A spokesperson for the task force said the Washington, D.C. Metropolitan Police Department is leading the investigation. The spokesperson did not answer questions about the wounded soldier’s service record but said additional details would be released “when it is confirmed and appropriate for release.”

The Guardsmen were deployed in Washington as part of President Donald Trump’s mobilization of National Guard troops from across the United States. Their mission is to help local law enforcement fight crime in the nation’s capital.

More than 2,960 troops were supporting the mission as of Saturday, according to the task force. An ABC reporter also reported that another 2,000 Guardsmen will deploy to Washington in the spring for the NFL draft.

The shooting came less than a year after two National Guardsmen were shot in downtown Washington. Officials described that earlier attack as an ambush of the soldiers and an offense against the United States.

One of the Guardsmen in the earlier shooting died, while the other was seriously wounded. Both soldiers received Purple Heart awards, with one of the decorations awarded posthumously.

The latest incident began with Guardsmen witnessing a sidewalk fight and stepping in before an armed person allegedly fired. By Monday morning, the wounded soldier had left the hospital, while Washington police remained responsible for determining how the exchange unfolded and which Guardsman struck the suspect.
