Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and one of President Donald Trump’s closest advisers, called for the United States to withdraw from NATO and the United Nations, adding to his growing criticism of Ukraine and its leadership.
His statement followed a tense Oval Office meeting between President Trump, Vice President JD Vance, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Friday, which has further strained relations between Washington and Kyiv.
Musk’s position was made clear on X when he responded to a post advocating for U.S. withdrawal from NATO and the U.N.
“I agree,” Musk wrote, signaling his support for disengaging from the alliances.

His comments come amid mounting concerns from European leaders that Trump may move to pull the U.S. out of NATO, a concern that has persisted since his first term.
Musk’s direct call for withdrawal has amplified those fears, particularly as his influence within the Trump administration continues to grow.
Following Friday’s White House meeting, Musk also questioned the billions of dollars in U.S. aid sent to Ukraine.
“Time to find out what really happened to the hundreds of billions of dollars sent to Ukraine,” Musk posted on X shortly after the meeting between Trump and Zelensky.

He also shared a meme mocking Zelensky’s insistence on a U.S. security guarantee as a condition for a ceasefire with Russia.
The image depicted a tram crushing people while a man labeled “Zelensky” held the lever, refusing to stop the tram without guarantees it would not restart later.

Musk has also reposted multiple X posts questioning NATO’s role in modern geopolitics.
“NATO is a Cold War relic that needs to be relegated to a talking kiosk at the Smithsonian,” Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) wrote in a post reshared by Musk.

Additionally, Musk reposted a video purportedly showing Ukrainian military recruiters forcibly detaining a man and dragging him into a van as he pleaded that his child was alone at home.
Journalist Glenn Greenwald responded to the footage, stating, “It’s so easy to sit in European capitals or nice U.S. TV studios and cheer war in Ukraine all to derive a feeling of purpose and self-esteem, because those being sent to die are not them but Ukrainians violently dragged off the street and sent as cannon fodder on the front lines.”

Musk played a critical role in Ukraine’s defense efforts early in the war. When Russia launched cyberattacks on Viasat, disrupting Ukrainian military communications, the U.S. turned to Musk for assistance.
In response, Musk’s company SpaceX deployed thousands of Starlink satellite terminals to Ukraine, enabling the country’s military to restore its communications network.

In the early days of the war, Zelensky publicly thanked Musk, and the billionaire was widely seen as a key ally of Ukraine.
However, Musk’s relationship with Kyiv soured in October 2022 when he suggested Ukraine should negotiate peace with Russia, including recognizing Crimea as part of Russian territory.
Musk’s proposal was met with strong backlash from Ukrainian officials.
Then-Ukrainian Ambassador to Germany Andrij Melnyk lashed out at Musk, writing on X, “F**k off is my very diplomatic reply to you @elonmusk.”

He later added, “The only outcome ist (sic) that now no Ukrainian will EVER buy your f**king Tesla crap. So good luck to you.”

Zelensky himself also criticized Musk at the time, running a poll suggesting that the tech mogul “supports Russia.”
Musk’s latest string of posts following the White House meeting prompted renewed criticism from pro-Ukraine voices.
Rick Wilson, co-founder of the Lincoln Project, reposted a comment from one of the group’s senior advisers that accused Musk of supporting a ‘genocidal dictator,’ referencing Russian President Vladimir Putin.
It was used to defend a democracy from the genocidal dictator you support.
You feel full of yourself now. So did the Nazi elite you mimic in 1939. You might take a break from ketamine and read up on Nuremberg trials. This won’t play out the same but there will be a day when… https://t.co/lHxuxmlYXE— Stuart Stevens (@stuartpstevens) March 1, 2025
The post also suggested that Musk would one day “be held accountable” in an international tribunal similar to the Nuremberg Trials.
Despite the backlash, Musk continues to question U.S. support for Ukraine and its military alliances, signaling a growing divide within Washington over America’s foreign policy stance.
As tensions between Trump and Zelensky escalate, Musk’s influence in the administration’s decision-making on Ukraine, NATO, and U.S. foreign aid is expected to play a significant role in shaping future policy.
