The U.S. Navy announced Thursday that it has relieved Cmdr. Christopher Johnson of his duties as commanding officer of Navy Information Operations Command (NIOC) Colorado.

The decision was made by Capt. Chelsey Zwicker, commodore of Naval Information Operations Command Pacific, citing a “loss of confidence in his ability to command.”

“The Navy maintains the highest standards for commanding officers and holds them accountable when those standards are not met,” the service stated in a release.

As is typical in these situations, the Navy did not provide additional details regarding the reasons behind Johnson’s dismissal.

The phrase “loss of confidence” is commonly used in such cases to describe a wide range of issues that may impact a leader’s ability to effectively command.

Cmdr. Johnson had been in charge of NIOC Colorado since May 2023. Following his relief, he has been temporarily reassigned to U.S. Fleet Cyber Command.

According to his official biography on the Naval Information Forces website, Johnson commissioned through Officer Candidate School and has served in several significant operational and instructional roles over the course of his career.

At sea, he held posts including division officer and officer of the deck aboard the aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson, served as cryptologic resource coordinator for Carrier Strike Group Nine aboard the USS Theodore Roosevelt, and acted as director of the offensive maritime information operations center for U.S. 7th Fleet aboard the USS Blue Ridge, an amphibious command ship.

His shore assignments have been equally distinguished. Johnson served as deputy collections manager and cyber operations officer at U.S. Pacific Fleet and later as senior cryptologic warfare instructor and executive officer at Information Warfare Training Command Corry Station in Pensacola, Florida.

In the interim, Cmdr. Mark Tuner, the Naval Information Forces liaison officer to U.S. Fleet Cyber Command, has been appointed to temporarily lead NIOC Colorado until a permanent commanding officer is identified.

NIOC Colorado is part of the broader Naval Information Operations Command Pacific, headquartered at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam in Hawaii.

The command plays a vital role in the Navy’s cyber operations and information warfare initiatives, which are increasingly critical to national security and modern military strategy.

The Navy’s swift action underscores its commitment to accountability at all levels of leadership.

While no further information has been released about the circumstances leading to Cmdr. Johnson’s relief, the move signals that the service is maintaining strict oversight of those entrusted with the command of critical operations.

As the Navy continues to evolve in an increasingly digital and contested information environment, leadership at commands like NIOC Colorado remains vital.

The selection of a permanent replacement will be closely watched as the service seeks to ensure continuity and effectiveness in its cyber and information warfare missions.
